How Long Does the CRBA Process Take in 2026?

One of the first questions expat parents ask is, "When can we travel to the U.S. with the baby?"

The answer depends on where you live. While the State Department aims for efficiency, the reality of CRBA processing times varies wildly between a quiet consulate in Micronesia and a busy embassy in Manila or London.

Here is a realistic timeline breakdown for 2026.

Phase 1: Application & Review (1-2 Weeks)

After you submit your eCRBA on MyTravelGov, the embassy staff reviews it digitally.

  • Best Case: They approve your docs in 3-5 days and invite you to schedule.
  • Common Case: You can try to schedule an appointment immediately after paying.

Phase 2: The Appointment Wait (The Bottleneck)

Time: 2 Weeks to 4 Months

This is the variable that trips everyone up. You cannot get a CRBA without an interview.

  • Low Demand Posts: You might find an appointment for next week.
  • High Demand Posts (Manila, Mexico City, London, Tokyo): You might log in and see "No Appointments Available" for months.

This "appointment drought" is the main reason families get stuck abroad.

Don't fly blind. If you need to travel soon, you can't afford to check the calendar once a week. Use CRBA Monitor to check for cancellations every hour. We help families cut this wait time from months to days.

Phase 3: Processing after Interview (2-4 Weeks)

Once you pass the interview, the hard part is over. The officer approves the citizenship, and the printing request is sent to the United States.

  • CRBA Certificate: Printed in the U.S. and mailed to the embassy.
  • Passport: Printed in the U.S. and mailed to the embassy.

Most embassies will then courier these documents to your local address.

Total Timeline Estimates

| Region | Estimated Total Time | | :--- | :--- | | Europe (London, Paris, Frankfurt) | 4 - 8 Weeks | | Asia (Manila, Tokyo, Bangkok) | 6 - 12 Weeks (due to appointment backlog) | | Americas (Mexico, Canada) | 4 - 8 Weeks | | Global Average | 6 Weeks |

Can I Expedite a CRBA?

No. Unlike a passport renewal, there is no "Expedited Service" fee for a CRBA.

The only way to speed it up is to:

  1. Have your documents perfect (so you don't get asked for more evidence).
  2. Snag the earliest possible appointment.

We can't help with the evidence, but we can help with the appointment.
